One of the questions we often hear from buyers is:

“Why did the fragrance smell perfect in the sample bottle, but different after we added it to our shower gel or detergent?”

The simple answer is that fragrance never works alone. Once it is added to a finished product, it begins interacting with the product base. Surfactants, oils, emulsifiers, pH, processing temperature and dosage can all influence what we eventually smell.

That is why a fragrance can feel fresh and bright on a blotter, softer in body lotion and more soapy in laundry detergent. It may even perform differently in two formulas from the same product category.

A Blotter Is Only the First Step

Smelling a fragrance on a blotter is useful when comparing fragrance directions. It can help a buyer decide whether a sample is too floral, too sweet, too citrusy or close to the required concept.

However, a blotter cannot reproduce the conditions inside a finished product.

Once the fragrance enters a shower gel, detergent or lotion base, some notes may become stronger while others become less noticeable. The balance between the top, middle and base notes may also change.

For this reason, we do not recommend making a final decision based only on the fragrance oil itself. The most meaningful evaluation happens in the customer’s actual product base.

What Changes the Fragrance in a Finished Product?

The base formula

Every base has its own composition.

Shower gels and liquid soaps contain surfactants. Body lotions contain oils and emulsifiers. Laundry products may have more complex washing and rinsing conditions.

These ingredients influence how the fragrance dissolves, how quickly it is released and which notes are most noticeable.

Even two shower gel bases may give different results if their surfactant systems, pH or other ingredients are not the same.

The pH level

Some fragrance materials respond differently under acidic, neutral or alkaline conditions. As a result, a fragrance developed for a mild personal-care product may not give the same odor profile in a laundry or household-cleaning product.

Sharing the approximate pH with the fragrance supplier makes it easier to select a suitable fragrance from the beginning.

The manufacturing process

The point at which the fragrance is added can matter. Processing temperature, mixing time and exposure to air or light may also affect the finished result.

If the fragrance is added at an unsuitable temperature, for example, some of its more volatile notes may lose impact.

This is why the supplier should understand not only the product category but also the basic manufacturing process.

The dosage

Using more fragrance does not always produce a better result.

A dosage that is too low may not provide enough impact. A dosage that is too high can increase costs, affect the balance of the scent or create compatibility concerns.

The right dosage should be found through testing in the finished base. It should also be checked against the relevant technical and regulatory documentation for the intended application.

The way the product is used

Consumers experience a shower gel very differently from a fabric softener.

Shower gel is mixed with water, used for a short time and rinsed away. Laundry fragrance may be evaluated in the detergent bottle, during washing, on wet fabric and again after the fabric is dry.

Body lotion is applied directly to the skin, where the scent develops gradually.

A fragrance should therefore be evaluated at the stages that matter for the actual product—not only when the package is first opened.

Can One Fragrance Be Used in Several Products?

Sometimes it can, but it should not be assumed.

A fragrance that works well in liquid soap may need to be adjusted before it is used in laundry detergent or body lotion. Performance is one consideration; intended use and documentation are equally important.

The IFRA Standards may prohibit, restrict or set specifications for certain fragrance ingredients according to their intended application. An IFRA Certificate of Conformity should therefore correspond to the correct product category.

It is also important to remember that IFRA conformity does not replace the finished-product manufacturer’s responsibility to assess the final product and comply with the regulations of the destination market.

A Practical Way to Evaluate Fragrance Samples

Start by smelling the fragrance oil or blotter to narrow down the preferred fragrance direction. Once the most suitable options have been selected, add them to the actual product base.

Where appropriate, compare two or three realistic dosage levels under the same conditions. This gives a much clearer picture than comparing undiluted fragrance oils.

The samples should then be evaluated at the stages relevant to the product. For laundry applications, this may include the detergent itself, wet fabric and dry fabric. For personal-care products, it may include the odor in the package, the fragrance during use and the impression left on the skin.

Stability and compatibility testing should also be completed before commercial production. Depending on the product, the evaluation may cover odor, color, clarity, separation, viscosity and packaging compatibility.

The finished-product manufacturer should determine the testing conditions and duration according to its formula, market and internal quality requirements.

What Should You Tell Your Fragrance Supplier?

A clear brief saves time for both the buyer and the fragrance team. When requesting samples, try to provide:

  • Product category and format

  • An unscented base or representative formula

  • Approximate pH

  • Manufacturing conditions relevant to the fragrance

  • Target market and consumer

  • Preferred fragrance direction

  • Benchmark product or reference

  • Expected dosage range

  • Target price

  • Required technical and regulatory documents

Descriptions such as “fresh,” “premium” or “long-lasting” are helpful starting points, but they can mean very different things to different people.

A benchmark product, photo, mood reference or description of the desired consumer experience can make the brief much more precise.

What Documents Should a Buyer Request?

The exact requirements depend on the product and destination market, but buyers commonly ask for:

  • IFRA Certificate of Conformity for the intended application

  • Safety Data Sheet

  • Allergen information

  • Technical specification

  • Batch-related quality documents

  • Market-specific declarations, where required

These documents should be reviewed before the fragrance is approved for commercial production.

Why does a fragrance smell good on a blotter but weak in shower gel?

The shower gel base changes the way fragrance materials are held and released. The product is also diluted with water and rinsed away during use. Testing the fragrance in the actual shower gel base gives a more reliable result.

Will adding more fragrance make the product last longer?

Not necessarily. Longevity depends on the fragrance composition, product base, dosage and method of use. Increasing the dosage may raise the cost without producing the same level of improvement in performance.

Can a detergent fragrance be added to body lotion?

It should only be considered after checking its performance, documentation and suitability for the new application. Approval for one product category should not automatically be treated as approval for another.

Do I need to send my product base to the fragrance supplier?

It is strongly recommended whenever possible. Testing in the actual base allows the fragrance team to evaluate compatibility and performance under conditions closer to the finished product.

A good fragrance is not simply one that smells attractive in the bottle. It also needs to work in the intended product, remain compatible with the base and create the experience the consumer expects.

The earlier the fragrance supplier understands the base formula, application and target market, the easier it becomes to recommend suitable samples and reduce repeated development work.
