An essential oil is the volatile aromatic extract of a single plant species, obtained by steam distillation, cold expression or solvent extraction. A fragrance oil is a blend formulated by a perfumer from aroma chemicals, natural extracts, or both. Neither is inherently better. The right choice depends on what the finished product has to survive, what claim it has to support, and how tightly the cost has to be controlled.
This guide sets out the differences that matter in production, and corrects three assumptions that regularly cost buyers money.

There is no strawberry, ocean breeze or fresh linen essential oil. Those scents exist only as formulated fragrances. If your product concept depends on one, the decision is already made.
"Essential oils are exempt from IFRA." They are not. IFRA restricts fragrance materials, and it makes no distinction between natural and synthetic origin. Bergamot oil is restricted because of phototoxic furocoumarins. Cinnamon bark oil is restricted because of cinnamaldehyde sensitization. Oakmoss and treemoss are restricted. A supplier who tells you an essential oil needs no IFRA documentation is telling you they do not have it.
"Switching to essential oils shortens the allergen label." Usually the opposite. The EU declarable fragrance allergens are largely naturally occurring terpenes and terpene alcohols. Lavender oil naturally contains linalool, limonene, geraniol and coumarin — four declarable substances from one ingredient. Citrus oils are dominated by limonene and citral. The declaration thresholds are low: broadly 0.001% in leave-on products and 0.01% in rinse-off products, and Regulation (EU) 2023/1545 substantially expanded the list of substances covered. A formulated fragrance can be designed around these constraints. An essential oil cannot — it contains what the plant put in it.
"Natural means gentler on skin." Sensitization risk tracks the individual molecule, not its origin. Oxidized citrus, lavender and tea tree oils are meaningfully more sensitizing than fresh ones, which is why storage conditions and shelf life matter more for essential oils than buyers expect. Cinnamon bark, clove and lemongrass oils all carry recognised sensitization restrictions.

Between the two sits a category worth knowing about: fragrances formulated from natural raw materials only, sometimes sold as natural compounds or ISO 16128-aligned fragrances.
These are blended like a fragrance oil — matched to a reference standard, engineered for the base, available in scents no single plant produces — but built entirely from materials of natural origin. They cost more than a conventional fragrance and less than the equivalent volume of pure essential oil, and they carry the batch consistency essential oils cannot.
If you want a natural positioning but need reliable production, ask your supplier for this option specifically. Many buyers never learn it exists because they never ask.
Adulteration is the main commercial risk in essential oil sourcing, and it is common. The usual patterns:
Lavender extended with lavandin or synthetic linalyl acetate
Peppermint extended with dementholized cornmint
Rose and geranium extended with citronellol and geraniol from other sources
Sandalwood and vetiver extended with cheaper fixatives
Expensive oils cut with odourless carrier oil or dipropylene glycol
What to ask for, in order of practicality:
GC-MS profile with every batch, showing the main constituents and their percentages. This is the primary screening tool and any serious supplier can provide it.
Physical parameters on the COA — specific gravity, refractive index and optical rotation. These are cheap to measure and adulteration often shifts them outside specification.
Botanical name, country of origin and extraction method stated explicitly. Lavandula angustifolia and Lavandula × intermedia are different products at different prices.
A retained reference sample held by both sides, so batch two can be compared against batch one physically, not just on paper.
An independent lab check once a year on your highest-value oil. Chiral GC detects synthetic linalool in lavender; isotope ratio methods distinguish natural from synthetic origin. Expensive, but worth it annually on the oil you buy most of.
A supplier who cannot produce a GC-MS report for an essential oil is not a supplier you should be buying essential oils from.

Both require an SDS carrying the flash point and UN classification, which determine whether your shipment moves as general cargo or as Class 3 dangerous goods. A closed-cup flash point above 60 °C generally keeps a shipment out of the dangerous goods regime.

Why does my essential oil smell different from the last batch? Essential oil composition varies with harvest year, growing region, weather and distillation conditions. Variation of ten to thirty percent in major constituents between harvests is normal. Hold a retained reference sample and agree an acceptable range with your supplier in advance.
Are essential oils more expensive? Per kilogram, usually yes, and the gap widens for oils like rose, sandalwood and jasmine. Compare cost per tonne of finished product rather than per kilogram of oil, and factor in the higher dosage most essential oils need to reach comparable impact in a wash-off base.
Can essential oils be used in laundry detergent? Technically yes, commercially it rarely works. They fade quickly on dry fabric and the dosage needed for a perceptible result makes the cost per tonne unattractive. Fabric care is the clearest case for a formulated fragrance.
How do I know if an essential oil is adulterated? Request a GC-MS profile with every batch and check specific gravity, refractive index and optical rotation against specification. Hold a retained reference sample, and send your highest-value oil to an independent lab once a year.
What is a natural fragrance? A fragrance compounded entirely from materials of natural origin. It behaves like a fragrance oil — consistent, base-stable, available in any scent direction — while supporting a natural positioning. It costs more than a conventional fragrance and less than pure essential oil.
Which has the longer shelf life? Most essential oils keep 24–36 months sealed and cool, but citrus oils oxidize and are typically specified at around 12 months. Fragrance oils are normally specified at 12–24 months. Oxidized oils are not only weaker but more sensitizing, so storage matters.
